Epic South: A South-to-North Adventure

Day 1: 

Arrive in Cuenca

Leave your home for Ecuador, arriving in Cuenca in the evening (8,399 feet / 2,560 meters). Our team will pick you up at the local airport and bring you to the hotel in the historic city center. 

Day 2:

​Explore the historical city, Cuenca is famous for its European architecture, beautiful churches, its 4 rivers, and the mountains view. After touring, we spend the afternoon preparing for the next day's hike. 

Day 3:

Acclimatization - Virgen, Padre Urco, Sayausi 

Elevation/Altitude: Highest: 4.220 m. / 13.845,14 ft. lowest: 3,645 meters / 11,958 feet .

Distance: 12 km / 7.46 miles 

Ascent: 

Duration: 5 - 6 hours approx. 

Day 4:

Llaviuco - Tres Cruces Inca Trail

Elevation/Altitude: Highest: 4.190 m. / 13.746.72 ft. lowest: 3150 m. / 10.334.65 ft.

Distance: 18 km (11 miles) 

Ascent: 870 m. / 2.854.33 ft.

Duration: 6 - 8 hours approx. 

Day 5:

Recovery day

This day is dedicated to rest and recharge, where we will practice yoga. It is also a good time to explore the city and enjoy some free time.

Day 6:

Transfer to Carihuairazo / Camping

Travel from Cuenca to Chimborazo province, the trip takes around 6 - 7 hours and offers stunning views of the Andes. ​

 

Once you arrive in Carihuairazo, you can explore the surrounding area and the nearby Chimborazo Volcano, which is the highest peak in Ecuador. There are several hiking and climbing routes in the area, as well as opportunities for wildlife viewing and cultural experiences with the local indigenous communities. It's important to note that the high altitude in this region can be challenging for some travelers, so it's recommended to acclimatize gradually and take necessary precautions to avoid altitude sickness.

Day 7:

First Summit / Carihuarizo 

Begin the ascent at 4 am.

Elevation/Altitude: Highest: 5.050 m. / 16.568.24 ft. lowest: 4400 m. / 14.435.7 ft.

Distance: 11,63 km / 7.2 miles

Ascent: 681 m / 2.234.25 ft.

Duration: 6 - 8 hours approx. 

Day 8:

Recovery day

This day is dedicated to rest and recharge, where we will practice yoga at Chimborazo Lodge.

Day 9:

Transfer to Chimborazo base camp - hike to  Agujas Whymper.

Elevation/Altitude: Highest: 5.240 m. / ft. 17191.6 ft. lowest: 4.834 m. / 15.859.58 ft

Distance: 2 km / 1.2 miles

Ascent: 390 m / 1.279.53 ft.

Duration: 4 hours approx. 

Day 10:

High Camp

 

Acclimatization at the refuge high camp at 5,300 meters / 17, 388 feet

Day 11:

Summit Day - Vintimilla / Whymper summit

Elevation/Altitude: Highest: 6,263 meters / 20,548 ft. lowest: 4750 m /  15584 ft.

Distance: 10 km (6.2 miles) 

Ascent: 1400 m. / 4593.1 ft.

Duration: 8 - 12 hours approx. 

Vintimilla / Whymper summit depends on the weather and fitness level. 

Day 12:

Weather day - Travel to Quito.
