The unrevealed trails in the Ecuadorian Andes

Day 1: 

Arrive in Quito (the Capital of Ecuador)

Leave your home for Ecuador, arriving in Quito (9,500 feet/2,896 meters) in the evening. Our team will pick you up and bring you to (hotel) located close to excellent restaurants and the tourist center of the city. 

Day 2:

Explore Quito and preparation for the trip! 

Explore the city: Quito is known for its beautiful churches, presidential palace, downtown, and amazing views.  After 12 pm, we will spend the afternoon preparing for our first run, briefing and organizing gear, accompanied by our guides.

Day 3:

Teleferico - Trail Rucu Pichincha 

The first destination will be an acclimatization run, this is a 10k (6.2 miles) at one of the highest points in Quito, this exhilarating adventure takes you through stunning mountain terrain, with breathtaking views of the Andes Mountains and Quito's sprawling cityscape.

Elevation/Altitude: Highest: 4.696 m - 15.406 ft Lowest: 4.100 m - 13451.44 ft.

Duration: 8 hours approx

Ascent: 780 m - 2559 ft. 

 

Day 4:

Quilotoa 

From Quito, we are headed to the most iconic and stunning volcano, the Quilotoa crater,  and experience the thrill of trail running around the stunning turquoise waters of the lake. This is the spot for one of the most important trail running competition in the country. After enjoying the community, the next stop is Baños de Ambato for the next destination. 

Elevation/Altitude: highest 3.929 m - lowest 3.739 m

Distance: 10.29 km

Ascent: 594 m  

Duration: Full Day

Day 5:

Baños de Ambato - Recovery Day

This day is dedicated to rest and recharge, we will practice yoga and enjoy the city, it is a great time to visit the local spots like Pailon del diablo (waterfalls) and the hot springs. 

Day 6:

De la Virgen - Casa del arbol -  Petzl Trail Running route 

De la Virgen is a famous trail running route, with stunning views of the city and surrounding mountains, you will be immersed in the natural beauty of the Andes. As you navigate this trail, you'll be testing your endurance and agility. Once a year, thousands of runners participate in the Petzel Trail Running Competition. 

Elevation/Altitude: Highest: 2660 m / 8727.03 ft. lowest: 1670 m / 5479 ft.

Distance: 19.80 km (12.30 miles) 

Ascent: 2140 m 

Duration: 4 hours approx. 

Day 7:

Baños de Ambato to Riobamba - Recovery Day

This day is dedicated to rest and recharge, the perfect day to enjoy at a local hotel, great food, and stunning views of the Chimborazo volcano in the Andaluza Hotel.

Day 8:

Andaluza - Atillo - Ozogoche Trail 

This exhilarating trail takes you through some of the most breathtaking natural lakes, with stunning views of the ‘Sangay volcano’, you will be running through the Royal Mountain Range, and this route takes you to one of the most incredible lagoons, where you will learn about the story of the native birds and the meaning and importance of this place. 

Atillo lake meaning: punishment or penance lake

Distance: 14 km (8.70 miles) 

Ascent: 950 m / 3116 feet

Duration: 6 hours (Full Day) 

Day 9:

Recovery Day 

Rest day, in Achupallas, is a great place to immerse in the community and learn about the Inca Trail. This is a remote town in the Ecuadorian highlands. 

Day 10:

Camino del Inca - Achupallas - Ingapirca

This ancient trail, once used by the Incas to cross the Andes, offers a glimpse into the region's rich cultural and historical significance. You will start the trail in Achupallas, a small local town, then follow the Inca Trail in the middle of the mountains and follow the river to Lake Culebrillas. We will enjoy a delicious lunch in Ingapirca, an archaeological complex located in the Andean region of southern Ecuador. It is considered the most important and best-preserved pre-Columbian site in the country. Transfer to Cuenca.

Ascent: 1120 m

Day 11:

Cuenca - Recovery Day

This day is dedicated to rest and recharge, it is a great time to visit the local hot springs to recharge for the last run. Also, you get to experience the city and learn about their cuisine with local food cooking classes. 

Day 12:

Trail Burines - Llaviuco 13.8 km

The route from Burines to Llaviuco is a spectacular way to explore El Cajas National Park in Ecuador. This route is typically completed as a hiking or trekking trail, and covers a distance of approximately 14 kilometers from east to west, taking approximately 5 - 6 hours to complete, depending on the speed and number of stops.

The trail passes through rugged terrain, the cloud forest, and over the mountains, taking in the stunning natural beauty of El Cajas National Park. Along the way, hikers will pass by 8 beautiful lagoons and lakes, which are at an altitude of 3,900 meters above sea level. These lagoons and lakes are a highlight of the route, offering incredible views of the surrounding landscape and wildlife.

Elevation/Altitude: highest: 4.088 m - 13451.44 ft. - lowest: 3.142 m - 10308.4 ft.

Distance: 13.8 km / 8.57 miles

Ascent: 218 m /  715.2 ft.

Descent: 1040 m / 3412.07 ft

Duration: 8 hours
